OK, this post was definitely the highlight of my afternoon. And I say that after having watched a news piece on how a feline stationmaster made $10 million for a tiny town in Japan.
As a fan of The Rock's post-wrestling acting career, I was surprised by how unrecognizable "Dwayne Johnson the actor" (the current Dwayne Johnson) is in any of these clips. WWF mostly has him made up like some backwoods Elvis, and I'm hard-pressed to think of any character with more catchphrases: I had almost forgotten gems like "Know Your Role," "Jabroni," and "It doesn't matter … "
Still, in the clips where he smiles, you can kind of tell that this is a good-looking guy with a boatload of charisma. I humbly submit Be Cool, The Rundown, and The Game Plan as evidence. Now I’m curious: Has any other wrestler crossed over to acting as successfully? Yes, Andre the Giant had a handful of roles, but, according to IMDB, most of those were as "Big Foot," "Circus Giant," "Monster," etc.
"Rowdy" Roddy Piper had a few movie roles in the '80s and then went on to do random crap here and there:

Hogan had a few starring vehicles that tanked:

But yeah it's sort of become this big thing among wrestling fans that Rock was the only person to ever really "escape" the wrestling world. Everyone else, you see them "retire" at the top of their game and then years later they resurface, whether it be (for the fortunate) making a surprise appearance at a Pay Per View event or becoming a commentator, or (for the less fortunate) ending up wrestling some no-names in a high school auditorium somewhere in the Midwest. Most of these guys, they have no marketable skills outside wrestling and they don't seem to be able to save their money. (It also doesn't help that only the top guys really bring in tons of money; the rest get paid a decent salary but spend most of it just eating and sleeping on the road from venue to venue, as WWE does not generally pay for their travel expenses even though it's part of their job.)
But The Rock, on the other hand, got out. He made his money, became known, and then moved onto bigger and better things. No one else who was a big star during the big wrestling boom in the late '90s was able to turn that into anything outside wrestling in the way that Rock did. Austin? Nope. Shawn Michaels? Nope. Mankind (Mick Foley)? Nope. Actually Foley came the closest, getting into a writing career, but that never got him much of anywhere in the end.
Anyway... that's about all I can say about that one. But yeah, it became clear at some point that The Rock was pretty unique. If you smell what The Rock is cookin'.
