So here is my latest pondering...
I was thinking while at the gym last night, what artists would I choose to play on the soundtrack for my life. This was fun to think about becuase some groups I like their sound, others their lyrics and other groups are long since broken up or dead. Well, since this is my idea, I have decided to open it up to you (and Jess when she returns from hiatus) to list any groups and/or songs you want to see on your soundtrack. I think this will be fun for all of us becuase I am sure the soundtrack will continue to change over time and we will wish to revisit it.
Here's my list (in no particular order)
- Nickelback- Figured you out
- KWS- Please don't go
- Linkin Park- TBA
- No Mercy- Where do you go?
- SNOW- TBA
There are definitely more to come, but I think I would want some original songs by some of these groups as well.
Oh, one other thing, I am sure you might want to have some of your own songs, but for the purposes of our discussion, let's focus on the other artists out there. :)

Someone asked on a forum I frequent, what song is the theme song to your life. Thinking purely in terms of sound/mood, and not lyrical content, I chose "Drive" by Incubus. It's got that kind of mellow, chill but pensive kind of vibe to it. Maybe I am little more erratic than that :), but you get the point. But the more I think about it, the more fitting I think that song is. I mean, you have this guy who is just thinking about how he often just kind of lets life take him where he goes, and how that's definitely appealing because you don't have to think, you just let life push you where it will. But by the end of the song, he realizes that you are really alive when you take charge of your own life, something I had to realize for myself also.
Incubus also have other more dynamic songs that work for my less pensive, more "rocking out" moments too.
I would put "Drinkin' and Drivin'" by The Business in there, not because I literally drink and drive all the time, and not because I really agree with the ideals the song seems to hold, but because for me the song captures the idea that you can still do stupid shit and laugh it off even when you're not a kid anymore. Besides, most other drinking-related songs tend to have a sense of regret or sadness to them, or mention of loneliness, and that doesn't really jive with me.
For the song to represent going out and being loud and having fun, it is a tie for me between two songs: "Drinking Song" by Protein, and "What It's Worth" by Plan of Man (a song I found a while ago on garageband.com). The lyrics to "Drinking Song" are more silly and hedonistic ("Let's go out drinkin', baby! I finished all my chores! You'll wear my clothes, and maybe I'll go out wearin' yours!"), while "What it's Worth" is a bit more negative and fuck-it-all ("I've seen it all, from how it is to how it's supposed to be... get drunk all day, smoke 'til you're barely breathing..."). But really it's the mood of both songs that really make them worthy of this category, and so I guess you'd have to have heard them in order to get that. I'll try and upload all these to my website and put the link here, because you know you care. :D
Maybe I'll think of more later, but I just realized that I actually have a job to be doing. :D
This is GREAT! I actually think about this all the time...well, maybe not all the time...though probably more than would be considered normal. :) Anyway, I will definitely add more to this list, but since I'm trying to catch up on blogging, email, etc...I will keep it short for now. There are four songs that immediately come to mind right away -- "Secret O' Life" by James Taylor (come on...you had to know he'd be in there). This is not so much because I always live my life by the lyrics, but because I STRIVE to do so. It's kind of like an idealist song for me. :) The other is the only disco song I really like, I Will Survive by Gloria Gaynor because I am a Dolber Trooper...and well, the lyrics are fitting. The third is "I Wish I Could Go Back to College and What Do You Do WIth a BA in English" from Avenue Q...I think no explanation is required. :)
I will definitely add to this list at a later time...but for now, I'll stop there. OH WAIT...no, I won't...I just thought of one more...Greenday's "Time of Your Life." It's like a musical photo album and every time I hear it I see this montage of college memories. It's great! So...on that note, more to come...
BTW...I think as long as nobody mentions "Brick" or "The Internet is for Porn" we are ok... :)
Oh...I forgot "Shower the People" by James Taylor :)
Yeah, "Brick" would be bad. Also, "JUmper" from Third Eye Blind is probably not one you want either. :D
I was playing the piano this morning, and realized I left out the song that probably most sums up my life in Boston at the present time, which is "Like Everyone She Knows." Yes, it's a James Taylor song, but there's a valid reason why I like the guy so much. He seems to have words for almost every emotion I've ever felt...that song in particular feels like it was written for me...I can't believe I forgot to mention it earlier. :)
I disagree with this notion that a song such as Brick doesn't belong on the soundtrack of one's life. Yes, the song does make me personally feel like driving my car into a ravine, but this does not mean that there is no place in one's life for these emotions. Albeit, a heavy dose of these emotions would not be healthy, however a song is more than the lyrics and I think there is a place for the feeling and tone that it conveys. Remember, the song must have been quite powerful in its own way if it is the first song we think of when we think of the "sad sack soundtrack"
Good argument. I totally agree.
